Labubu Movie Update: Wonka's Paul King In Early Development to Direct & Co-Write Feature

The popular Pop Mart figurine has taken over the world the past couple years, and last fall, it was revealed a movie was in the works.
Now, we’ve more details on the forthcoming movie, which will hail from Sony Pictures and Pop Mart.

Paul King, who has helmed the Paddington movies and Timothee Chalamet‘s Wonka, is set to direct and co-write the project, according to THR.
The movie is in early development with Paul, who will write the script with Tony-winning playwright Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for Dear Evan Hansen, as well as the screenplay for the movie adaptation.
Steven has also written the tick, tick… BOOM! movie, and the live-action Snow White, served a writer on Masters of Sex and was showrunner on FX’s Fosse/Verdon miniseries.
The Labubu feature is said to be a live-action and CGI hybrid. Additional details are currently unknown.
While Labubus skyrocketed to global popularity in 2024, the Monsters character is actually ten years old, first being created by Kasing Lung for his The Monsters story series. Then in 2019, Lung teamed with Pop Mart for toy dolls, and it started to gain momentum before become the global phenomenon we know it to be now!
Other popular toys that are getting movie adaptations include Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Hot Wheels, Monster High and Masters of the Universe, which comes out this summer.
