Beloved ’80s Singer, With Iconic No. 1 Hit Song, Would Have Turned 67 Today

A beloved '80s singer known for one of the decade's most iconic chart-topping tracks would have turned 67 years old today. The voice behind songs that still resonate with listeners decades later, Irene Cara's birthday shines a spotlight on her enduring legacy.

Irene Cara Would Have Turned 67 Today

Irene Cara pouring her soul into a live performance, microphone in hand and eyes closed in musical intensity.

According to Britannica, Irene Cara was born on March 18, 1959, in the Bronx, New York. Sadly, the pop star passed away in Largo, Florida, on November 25, 2022, at age 63. Today would have been her 67th birthday.

An incredibly talented singer, Cara's vocals connected with listeners partially because she had such a powerful voice. However, her real gift as a performer was something deeper than that. She poured so much raw emotion into her vocals that when she sang about fighting for success, listeners could feel her passion. It was that part of Cara's talent that makes it seem like people can feel her voice as much as hear it. That connection she forged with listeners is why it seems hard to believe that she has passed away. Yet, similar to one of the most famous lines from her songs, her music truly will live forever.

Irene Cara's Iconic '80s No. 1 and Her Other Big Chart Hits

During the 1980s, Cara released several big hits. Most memorably, her song "Flashdance… What A Feeling" from the soundtrack for the movie Flashdance became one of the decade's most iconic songs, as Cara's Billboard chart history shows. Released in March 1983, the track spent 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 starting on April 2, 1983. It reached No. 1 on May 28, 1983, and held that spot for six weeks.

Though "Flashdance… What a Feeling" was her biggest success, it was far from her only hit. In 1980, Cara released the song "Fame," which appeared on the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 4. While reaching the Top 10 is impressive enough, the real indication of "Fame's" success was its staying power since it spent 26 weeks on the chart in total.

Ultimately, Cara had eight songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 during the '80s. Those songs were "Flashdance… What A Feeling," "Fame," "Breakdance," "Why Me?," "Out Here On My Own," "The Dream," "Anyone Can See," and "You Were Made For Me."
