Fiancée's Heartbreaking Tribute to Former Syracuse QB Rex Culpepper, Who Died Weeks After Getting Engaged: 'One in a Billion'
Rex Culpepper, the former Syracuse University quarterback, died at 28 after getting into a dirt bike accident in Georgia. His fiancée Savanna Morgan confirmed his passing in an Instagram post Monday.
'We Felt Like Extensions of Each Other'
"No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only 6 short years after meeting," she wrote, alongside photos and videos of the couple. "Rex didn't always believe in soulmates but towards the end he told me that he didn't realize what having a soulmate felt like until we felt like extensions of each other."
She described a relationship built on constant motion — learning new skills, traveling, never wasting a moment. "There was never any free time with us and not a moment spent apart," she wrote. "You made six years feel like a lifetime, Rexy."
Her closing words were the ones that hit hardest. "You don't just meet people like Rex all the time. He was one in a billion. There wasn't one thing that man couldn't do. Lawyer, mechanic, musician, chef, athlete, nerd….lover."
Who Was Rex Culpepper?
Culpepper's story has made headlines before. He played four seasons at Syracuse from 2017 through 2020, appearing in 30 games and passing for 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns. In March 2018, midway through his college career, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent extensive chemotherapy. That spring he came off the bench in Syracuse's spring game and led his team on a touchdown drive. He was declared cancer-free in June 2018.
Former teammate Eric Dungey remembered him as "a guy who had zero fear and truly lived life to the fullest." Culpepper was the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Brad Culpepper.
