Last Person to See John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette Alive Speaks Out

The man who was the last person to see JFK Jr. alive before his fatal plane crash - other than his wife and her sister, who were on the flight - has spoken out for the first time.

Kyle Bailey has written about the encounter in a new book called WITNESS: JFK Jr.'s Fatal Flight: The Last Witness. It comes as new audiences are learning about John F. Kennedy Jr., his tumultuous marriage to Carolyn Bessette, and their fatal crash through the FX and Hulu Series, A Love Story.

To Fox News Digital, Bailey described a premonition."I went home to my mother that night and said something to the effect of, ‘I just saw JFK Jr. at the airport. I hope he doesn’t kill himself someday in that airplane,’" Bailey recalled.

"That Piper Saratoga was a new airplane for him. It was complex and high-performance, unlike his older airplane, which he had just sold. I really hoped he had his instructor with him. I was just concerned for him. Was it a premonition? Possibly. But it was more of a deep concern for John and the two others."

Bailey's book blurb on Amazon says he was the final witness. "On the evening of July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette, and Lauren Bessette arrived at Essex County Airport, for what would become one of the most tragic flights in American aviation history. I was the last person to see them before and as they took off on their ill-fated flight," he wrote.

"As JFK. Jr.'s last sun set, I witnessed the calm before history changed forever. As a nationally recognized television news aviation analyst, I bring both personal proximity and professional clarity, to a story that captivated the world," Bailey wrote in the Amazon caption.

Bailey told Fox News that he wasn't sure whether Kennedy had a flight instructor with him. He didn't.

The NTSB wrote that the agency “determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation. Factors in the accident were haze, and the dark night.”

Kyle Bailey Says He Felt It Was Too Dangerous to Fly Due to Likely Reduced Visibility

A Coast Guard boat and a second boat head out from Mattituck Inlet on the North Shore of Long Island into Long Island Sound 17 July, 1999 where the search for the missing airplane believed to be carrying John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy to a family wedding in Massachusetts is being conducted. The plane left New Jersey 16 July, 1999 at about 8:30 p.m. EST and was expected to have landed on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts about 90 minutes later.

According to Fox News, Bailey was also planning to fly that night, but he" Bailey had also planned to fly to the island off the coast of Massachusetts but "changed his mind because of 'iffy' weather conditions." He is a "a licensed pilot and aviation analyst for Fox News," Fox News reported.

"I’ve seen John do that trip many, many times," Bailey told Fox News Digital. "It was just a typical Friday night. I planned on making two flights, an earlier flight in the afternoon, which I did for about an hour, just to go up for a spin. And then the nighttime flight was longer. It was, as we say in aviation, the three H's — hazy, hot and humid. Your typical New York City July day and evening."

"From my experience, I sensed that, based on those conditions, there probably would be reduced visibility that night up in Martha's Vineyard," Bailey added. "It didn’t mean I was going to cancel my trip right then, though."

He told Fox News Digital that he saw Kennedy buy a banana and water and nothing seemed wrong. Bailey grew concerned about the fog. The weather seemed to be worsening, something he noticed in his earlier flight.

"I decided that night to cancel the flight," he said. "I was mad, but it was the right decision for me."

"I was noticing that the temperature and dew point, those spreads were getting closer and closer," he explained. "In weather, what that means is, there’s a very high probability of ground fog developing. In John's case, perhaps he wasn't told that or didn't know. You really can’t fault him for that, for what he doesn’t know or what he wasn’t told."
