ADHD association urges Gesy to include occupational therapy
The Cyprus ADHD Support Association called on authorities on Wednesday to integrate private occupational therapy into the general health system (Gesy), saying the service is a basic therapeutic need for many children with ADHD.
The association said occupational therapy helps children regulate sensory stimuli, develop executive functions and strengthen daily life skills, supporting school integration and overall development.
It noted that families currently pay €250 to €400 per month for two to three sessions a week, a significant burden for the average household.
In some rural areas, no services are available, creating inequalities in access.
Discussions between the Health Insurance Organisation and the Cyprus Association of Occupational Therapists remain unresolved.
Prior to the system’s implementation, the health ministry subsidised occupational therapy at €20 per visit.
The association urged the HIO, health ministry and the House health committee to reach an immediate agreement.
It urged the reinstatement of the previous subsidy until a permanent solution is found, emphasising that equal access to rehabilitation services is a fundamental right for all children.
