Pentagon says seventh US service member dies in Iran war
A seventh American service member has died in the ongoing war involving Iran and the United States, the U.S. Central Command said, more than a week after the conflict began.
The Pentagon said the soldier died from injuries sustained during Iran’s counter-attack on March 1 targeting US troops stationed in Saudi Arabia following earlier strikes against Iran.
Six other US troops were previously killed in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait, according to the Pentagon, marking one of the deadliest incidents involving American forces since the conflict escalated.
Iran launched retaliatory strikes after joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets on Feb. 28, targeting American positions and allied facilities across several Middle Eastern countries.
The conflict has caused widespread casualties across the region. Iranian authorities say more than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran in strikes by the United States and Israel.
Regional officials also report heavy casualties elsewhere, including nearly 400 people killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon and at least 10 civilians killed in Israel during Iranian attacks.
Amid the escalating conflict, Iran has announced that Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as the country’s new supreme leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.
The ongoing war and leadership transition in Iran have raised concerns among international observers that the conflict could deepen and further destabilize the Middle East.
