Kalani Robb Lands ‘First Ever’ Moving Hippie Jump on a Wave (Video)

In the beginning, skateboarding borrowed from surfing.

Sidewalk surfers, as they were originally called, mimicked their aquatic cousins, carving along the pavement, caressing the ground, and power-sliding on concrete banks that simulated ocean waves. The famed Z-Boys of Venice Beach, CA were among the inaugural surf-inspired skaters.

These days, however, the roles have reversed. Surfers look to skaters for inspiration. Mainly when it comes to aerial maneuvers. Spins, flips, shuv-its and kickflips. But this trick, below, from Momentum Generation alum Kalani Robb, is something different.

Introducing, the first-ever moving hippie jump. Kalani pulled off the maneuver at T-Street in San Clemente, California during a soft-top session. Shea Porter took off going right, while Kalani went left. When the two got close, Kalani jumped over the nose of Shea’s board, landing back on his own. NBD…never been done.

“So, technically it was a moving hippie jump,” BEEFS T.V. prompts Kalani after the move. “What do you want to name that thing? That’s your move?”

Kalani responds: “Historically, we’re going to name this bad girl…the ‘pre-Madonna.’”

Although there’s no official history on the maneuver from the world of skateboarding, it was one of the first tricks performed by sidewalk surfers in the sixties and seventies. It even precluded the trick that birthed all other skate tricks – the ollie.

It’s a rarely seen maneuver in skating today, and almost never in surfing.

According to a reddit thread on the history of the trick in skateboarding, one user explained:

“Some kind of correlation between hippies being a 70s movement, and that's when the hippy jump originated...That when it got its name or its rename somewhere in the 90s, they kept this reference in the use of the name hippy. Hippy = 70s.”
