Alex Cooper Reveals Why She Chose Spotify Over Amazon Years Ago
Alex Cooper is detailing some of the thought process that went into creating her media empire Unwell, including the Call Her Daddy podcast.
During a visit to Phoebe Gates‘ and Sophia Kianni‘s podcast The Burnouts, Alex revealed why she chose to go with Spotify over Amazon back in 2021.
At the time, she says she was offered similar deals from both, each one valued at about $60 million.

As for why she chose Spotify, Alex said, “To be honest, it was the same amount of money basically and a little less work. So I was like, why would I not do Spotify?”
Another downside for Amazon is that some of the episodes of her podcast would be behind a paywall.
“It was a lot as a creator at the time who didn’t have a company behind me. I was a one-woman show,” the podcast host shared. “I was just trying to look at how will I be able to execute this type of deal in a capacity that I feel like I’m actually capable of. Because I wanted to be a good partner.”
She added that the Spotify deal was easy to “wrap [her] head around” as it was 52 episodes a year with a guaranteed check each month. She didn’t need to hit a certain amount of downloads or anything to get the money.
But she did struggle with the way the industry works in terms of how agencies get checks and take their cut.
“I was like, ‘Wait, no, I want that in my bank account. And then I’ll send your 10%,’” Alex says. “Understandably, as an agency, you want that X amount of millions of dollars coming into whatever agency, UTA, WME, CAA, because then they can put that as basically that is in their revenue for the year.”
She clarified that the agency wasn’t being “shady,” she was just “so green” and had a lot to learn at the time.
In 2024, Alex signed a new deal with SiriusXM valued at $125 million.
A few months ago, she met up with Ellen Pompeo and her family at the 2025 World Series!
