Commissioner meets displaced Akrotiri residents
Commissioner of the presidency, Marios Hartsiotis, visited residents of Akrotiri staying in three Limassol hotels on Friday morning, assuring them that the state is supporting their safety, health and well-being amid ongoing security concerns.
Hartsiotis was accompanied by Kourion mayor Pantelis Georgiou, Akrotiri deputy mayor George Konstantinou and the civil commander of the British bases, George Kiteos.
Together with representatives from Civil Defence and the Cyprus Red Cross, Hartsiotis spoke with the 140 residents, including vulnerable groups and children, thanking them for their understanding.
The Red Cross also provided toys for the children.
“The first goal is to ensure the security of the state and the physical integrity and health of residents who are located in a sensitive area around the British bases,” Hartsiotis said.
“The state has managed to provide essential support swiftly and will address any further needs immediately,” he added.
The presidential commissioner said the main concern of residents was being away from their homes.
“A general risk assessment of the region is carried out daily. We hope conditions will soon allow people to return and life to resume as it was ten days ago,” he said.
Daily evaluations will continue to guide decisions on evacuation and safety measures, he said.
