UN experts say U.S., Israeli strikes on Iran violate international law
A group of independent experts linked to the United Nations condemned recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, saying the attacks violated international law.
In a joint statement issued Thursday, the experts said the strikes were carried out during ongoing diplomatic negotiations and without authorization from the United Nations Security Council.
They said the attacks breached fundamental principles of the UN Charter, including the prohibition on the use of force, respect for sovereign equality, territorial integrity and the obligation to settle disputes peacefully.
The experts also expressed concern about possible Iranian responses in the Persian Gulf and across the Middle East, stressing that any use of force in self-defense must comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality under international law.
They warned that illegal military intervention cannot resolve issues such as nuclear tensions, alleged terrorism concerns or human rights conditions in Iran, urging all parties to immediately halt hostilities and return to diplomatic dialogue.
The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran six days ago, saying the operation was aimed at preventing what they described as security threats posed by Tehran.
The attacks have heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East and diplomatic efforts struggle to contain the crisis.
UN experts said renewed diplomacy remains the only viable path to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation that could destabilize the region.
