Eight exemplary projects that showcase sustainable design

To inspire your entries to Dezeen Awards, we have rounded-up some of our favourite sustainable architecture and interiors projects from previous shortlisted submissions.

For every entry, we ask if your project is useful and considerate to both people and planet and how it shows respect and consideration for users and the environment.

However some projects, like these shortlisted submissions from past years, go above and beyond. We continue to support and champion these projects with our five sustainability categories, which are sustainable building, sustainable renovation, sustainable interior, sustainable design and material innovation.

Have you got a project to enter into our sustainability categories? Read on for previous standout examples of architecture and interiors sustainability projects that have been shortlisted in past editions of Dezeen Awards.

Haus 1 - Atelier Gardens by MVRDV

This 1990s office building in Berlin has been drenched in bright yellow paint and finished with a 57-metre-long zigzagging external staircase.

Designed by Dutch studio MVRDV, the striking landmark captures the "radical" and "optimistic" identity of the film and media campus it sits on.

An emblem of innovation, the renovation features bio-based finishes such as clay ceilings and materials with a high recycled content.

Aesop Diagonal by Mesura

Reclaimed stone fragments from 19th-century fountains, archways and Gothic buildings define the neutral-hued Aesop store in Barcelona.

Spanish studio Mesura repurposed pieces from demolished structures to create chunky basins and shelving units that celebrate the stone's raw textures and historical significance.

Katajanokan Laituri by Anttinen Oiva Architects

Sitting on Helsinki's waterfront is Finland's largest mass-timber building, designed by local studio Anttinen Oiva Architects to house the headquarters of a forestry company.

Around 7,600 cubic metres of spruce and ash were used to create the structure, which simultaneously draws on Finland's history of timber building and "sets an example for the possibilities of wood construction".

The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl's School by Diana Kellogg Architects

Diana Kellogg Architects drew from symbols of femininity and the surrounding sand-dunes to create this all-girls' school in the Thar Desert in the north of India.

Locally sourced, hand-carved sandstone is used throughout to blend the oval-shaped building into the desert terrain, while solar panels and a water harvesting system reinforce the structure's connection to its environment.

Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion by Chat Architects

Designed by Chat Architects, this pavilion was constructed by local fishermen who drove bamboo columns deep into the seabed near Bangkok, Thailand.

The structure brings visibility to the coastal fishing industry as fishermen invite tourists to visit and select their own oysters and mussels for a sea-to-table dining experience.

Monc by Nina+Co

London design studio Nina+Co created an undulating cornstarch-foam ceiling and mycelium display plinths for bioplastic eyewear brand MONC's Marylebone store.

Mindful of the brand's short-term lease of the shop, "circularity was key" to the project meaning bio-based or recycled objects that were introduced were designed for disassembly and re-use.
