'Marshals' Delivers Brutal Blow to 'Yellowstone’s' Monica Dutton
Why is Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in such a bad way in the debut of Marshals? Turns out a beloved Yellowstone character, someone that Kayce was very close to, died off screen in between the events of Yellowstone and the new sequel series.
This detail is revealed right away in the first episode of Marshals, and if you're a Yellowstone fan it was probably a bit of a shock. Here's what happened off screen and why it matters for the rest of Marshals.
Spoilers ahead for Marshals Season 1, Episode 1, "Piya Wiconi."
Is Monica Dutton dead?
After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in Season 1 of Yellowstone, the character of Monica (as played by Kelsey Asbille) has died in between the events of the finale of Yellowstone and the first episode of Marshals.
But how? We see Kayce grieving, and we even see Monica's grave. But what happened? The show offers some explanation, and it's partly tied in with the plot of the new show. Basically, various toxicities from the reservation made Monica's cancer worse, and she died because of those toxins. So yes, Monica Dutton is dead, and that makes Kayce a single parent from now on.
How Marshals changes the Yellowstone dynasty
Because Monica died off screen, Marshals is a subtle reboot of the entire basic premise of Yellowstone. Instead of Kayce becoming a steward of the ranch, he's more focused on being on his own. And, crucially, being a parent to young Tate.
The off-screen death of Monica is a pretty big deal, but it also separates Marshals from the tone of Yellowstone. The future of the Dutton Ranch won't be a big part of Marshals, but instead, will likely be explored in the next spinoff series, the one focused on Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser). That series, just titled Dutton Ranch, is expected later in 2026.
So, to put it more simply, the death of Monica, in a sense, isolates Kayce from the Duttons, meaning Marshals will, in a sense, be very much its own TV series.
