Vaughn Grissom, Logan O’Hoppe homer in Angels’ loss to Dodgers
THE GAME: The Angels took a three-run lead in the first on back-to-back homers, but ended up losing 4-3 to the Dodgers on Sunday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Reid Detmers gave up two runs in three innings, facing most of the Dodgers regular lineup. He threw 61 pitches, 37 strikes. “Making progress, better than last week,” said Detmers, who gave up three runs in 1⅔ innings in his first start. “Body felt way better. Felt a little bit more in sync. Still working on some stuff. Trying to hammer the bottom of the zone a little bit better.” Detmers also threw one changeup, which he used to retire Mookie Betts. Detmers used the pitch as a starter, but abandoned it as a reliever last year. He said he wants to “start mixing it in a little bit more.” … Right-hander Ryan Johnson gave up one run in three innings. He retired eight of the first nine hitters before giving up an opposite field homer. … Right-hander Austin Gordon entered in a tie game in the seventh and allowed a run on three straight hits, although two of them were bloopers.
HITTING REPORT: In the first inning, Vaughn Grissom hit a two-run homer, his first homer of the spring. Logan O’Hoppe followed with a homer, his second of the spring, to put the Angels up, 3-0. O’Hoppe is 4 for 12 with six RBIs this spring. … José Siri struck out in both of his plate appearances. Siri, who has struggled with strikeouts throughout his career, is 2 for 15 with six strikeouts this spring. … Oswald Peraza hit the ball over 100 mph in all three of his trips, but he had only one hit, a double. He also lined out and grounded out. …. Nelson Rada led off the game by dropping a perfect bunt up the third base line, and reaching on an infield hit. He also walked. Rada, the Angels’ 20-year-old top position player prospect, is 2 for 10 this spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Peraza, the shortstop, made a diving stop up the middle, flipping the ball to second for a force. … Center fielder Chris Taylor made a bad throw home after catching a shallow fly ball. Not only did he miss the chance to throw out the runner at the plate, but the ball got past the catcher and allowed the runner at first to go to second. … Kyren Paris played third for the first time, in spring training or the regular season. He began playing the position in Mexico over the winter.
