MCP allegedly used NEEF loans for political gain
The former governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has been accused of politicising the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) following a parliamentary inquiry into the fund’s operations.
The Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Corporations and State Enterprises says its findings indicate that political interference affected the disbursement of loans.
Some loans were allegedly issued as incentives for political support rather than on merit.
Presenting the report, chairperson Sylvester Ayuba-James said the practice undermines the credibility and integrity of the institution.
The committee also found that ministers from the previous MCP administration and some members of parliament had accessed loans intended for the underprivileged.
It further noted that youth and women remain underrepresented among beneficiaries.
