Daniel Cormier’s Gilroy wrestling dynasty reigns again as Mustangs boys, girls take home titles at CCS meet

Central Coast Section boys

Gilroy wins 23rd consecutive title

At this point, it’s not a matter of if Gilroy wins the CCS wrestling title.

It’s when, and by how much. The Mustangs clinched their 23rd consecutive section crown Saturday night in Watsonville under eighth-year coach Daniel Cormier, the UFC Hall of Famer who took over the Mustangs’ storied program in 2018 and has kept the standards, expectations and results as high as ever.

If not higher. For the third straight year, Gilroy eclipsed 300 points at the section championship meet, a feat that has only been achieved by seven teams in the section’s history.

All of them were from Gilroy High, and they have all come since the 2018 section meet, which was the season before Cormier took over from Greg Varela, who left to lead Los Gatos’ program.

Los Gatos finished runner-up with 202 points. St. Francis (173.5), Serra (102.5) and Palma (102.5) rounded out the top five.

See below for full championship results by weight class.

After a one-year hiatus, the Gilroy girls staked their claim back atop the section, finishing with 193 points to comfortably lead second-place Gunn (102.5).

Gilroy broke through for the first time as a section champ in 2024 and finished third last year. Now with another section title, Cormier may have another budding dynasty on his hands.

St. Francis (97), Monterey (92.5), Fremont-Sunnyvale (89.5) rounded out the rest of top five point-getters.

In an interesting twist, a Gilroy brother and sister were the only wrestlers to win individual championships by forfeit.

Travis Grace claimed the boys title at 175 pounds, and Tamara Grace took home the girls championship at 130.

Tamara won every match leading up to the championship by fall or technical fall, and Travis won every match by fall within 36 seconds of the match starting.
