Power Outages 'Expected' as 8 States Brace for 26 Inches of Snow Amid Winter Storm Warning

While much of the country experienced some warmer temperatures this week, the northeastern part of the United States is expected to be hit with a major snowstorm this weekend that is expected to bring upwards of two feet of snow in some areas.

In addition to the obvious travel implications, the NWS has warned that the storm is expected to cause power outages in the area.

Winter Storm Warnings

As the winter storm approaches, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of winter storm warnings impacting several states throughout the area, including New York, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maine, and New Hampshire.

The NWS warned to expect "heavy" snow of up to 26 inches in some areas.

"Snowfall rates over 1" per hour are possible, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions. Should higher totals above 6" occur, the weight of the heavy snow may lead to scattered power outages," the NWS warned in a post on X.

In addition to the heavy snow, the NWS is expecting strong, potentially dangerous winds throughout the area.

"Strong winds are likely from the coastal Mid-Atlantic to southern New England, which could result in power outages. Coastal flooding and erosion are also possible. Where these strong winds overlap with snowfall, reduced visibility and difficult travel is possible," the NWS warned.

Power Outages 'Expected'

With heavy snow and strong winds expected in the area, the National Weather Service has warned that power outages are "expected" in parts of the country, warning people in those areas to be prepared.

"Power Outages are EXPECTED across parts of the region due to the combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds lasting into Monday," the National Weather Service wrote in a post on X.

The NWS shared several tips for those expecting winter weather, especially where travel could be difficult, and power could be knocked out.

  • Keep enough non-perishable food, water and medications for at least 3 days.
  • Ensure you have warm clothing and blankets.
  • Make sure you have an updated first aid kit.
  • Charge your phone in advance and check for Wireless Emergency Alerts.

"Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather! Winter storms can knock out power and keep you from traveling for days," the NWS adds.

For those looking to prepare themselves ahead of a potential power outage, we've looked into one power station that stands out from the rest when it comes to powering your home during an outage.
