Producer of Brad Pitt's 'F1' Movie Gives Promising Hint About Sequel

A blockbuster, action-packed sports movie found itself in the race for Best Picture — and it may be getting a chance to rev up its engines a second time. One of the producers behind F1: The Movie, Apple TV's racecar flick starring Brad Pitt, hinted that a sequel could be coming down the track.

Jerry Bruckheimer, the legendary producer behind last summer's F1 as well as several of the biggest and most beloved blockbusters ever made—including Armageddon, Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure, Bad Boys, and The Rock—recently spoke with Variety. During the conversation, he expressed an interest in an F1 sequel while also confirming that two other sequels to movies he produced were further along in the works.

“We're developing another Top Gun. Hopefully we'll make another F1. We're working on another Pirates," Bruckheimer said.

F1 Joins Many Other Recent Action Hits That With Sequels

The Top Gun and Pirates sequels are not breaking news. Top Gun: Maverick, the Tom Cruise-led sequel to the '80s fighter jet actioner, was a critical and commercial success when it came out in 2022. Paramount, the studio behind Top Gun, was reportedly developing a sequel as far back as January 2024, and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed last year that he was writing the third movie. There's been talk of a sixth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for a while now, going back to the release of the most-recent installment, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales. In more recent years, Bruckheimer has said it might be a reboot. Neither the Top Gun nor Pirates of the Caribbean sequels are filming nor do they have release dates yet.

The F1 sequel, while seemingly even less far along than the other two titles Bruckheimer dropped, is notable. The movie made more than $600 million when it came out last summer and even got a somewhat surprisingly Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. It's not surprising that the people behind the movie might want to get behind the wheel again—especially considering that Apple TV now has the rights to broadcast F1 races in the United States.

At a recent press event, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said "stay tuned" when the subject of a sequel to the movie based on the racing sports league came up. "If this will happen, it will not be for next year. But maybe next year we’re going to be here, and hopefully we have something more to announce."

During his conversation with Variety, Bruckheimer didn't give additional details about what a sequel might look like, including whether or not Pitt would return to star.

"We're working on a lot of different movies that have become successful, and hopefully we can get 'em all made," Bruckheimer told Variety. "It's the greatest thing to do, to entertain people. It's not about the money anymore. It's about the smile you put on people’s faces, the fact that you move them."
