One friend said that Nwangene was asleep when “the snake bite woke her up.” They first went to a clinic to seek treatment, but the clinic didn’t have the anti-venom needed. They were rushed to a hospital, but the hospital only had one of the two required anti-venoms.
Another friend said he went searching for the second anti-venom, but Nwangene died in the meantime.
The medical center denies claims that the anti-venom was unavailable.
“Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom,” the medical center said in a statement. “We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily.”
Nwangene reportedly suffered “severe complications” from the bite and medics were not able to revive her.
We’re sending our thoughts and condolences to Ifunanya Nwangene‘s loved ones during this difficult time.
