Sports Briefs: Vangorder leads Redwood surge past AW

Redwood High drew closer to a perfect run through the MCAL girls basketball slate Friday with a 59-36 victory over Archie Williams High.

The Giants (17-5, 7-0 MCAL) outscored the Peregrine Falcons by 17 points in the second quarter to surge to a 33-14 halftime lead. Jaden Vangorder led the Giants with 16 points and Kitty White scored 13 points.

Reese Patton led the Falcons (12-9, 3-3) with 16 points, while Delphina Dong added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Both teams are in action Saturday against non-league opponents, with Redwood taking on Montgomery, and Archie Williams facing Vallejo.

  • San Marin led start to finish in Friday’s 54-24 City Championship victory over Novato (8-14, 3-3). Abby Bartholo hit four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points for the Mustangs (15-8, 5-1), while Eleanna Schram added 11 points. Norah Bentaleb had eight points and Megan McCune had seven for the Mustangs, who host Ukiah on Saturday.
  • Sanne Kostecki posted a game-high 23 points to go with three steals to lead San Domenico to a 61-23 victory over Convent on Friday night. Asia Melodynska had a solid game with nine points, four assists and eight steals, while Vicki Peter added 11 points and three rebounds. The Panthers (9-11, 4-4 BCL) are scheduled to face University on Wednesday.
  • Terra Linda picked up its first MCAL win, and second of the season, as the Trojans held off crosstown rival San Rafael, 39-31, on Thursday. Ryan Jefferys scored a game-high 15 points for the Trojans (2-13, 1-5), who also got nine points from Abby Gonzalez. The Bulldogs (6-11, 0-6) got 11 points from Jennifer Armas and nine points from Brisa Briseno in a close-fought game.
  • Sterling Colpitts scored a game-high 12 points to lead Marin Academy to a 40-20 victory over Convent on Thursday. Grace Kawaja added 9 points from beyond the arc for the Wildcats (14-8, 3-4 BCL) and Penelope Lee had six points. The Wildcats’ defense held Convent scoreless in the second quarter. Marin Academy hosts University on Saturday afternoon.

Boys basketball

Thomas Hellyer hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 47 seconds on the clock to lift San Rafael past crosstown rival Terra Linda in Thursday’s showdown at Dominican University. Hellyer finished with 14 points, including eight points during the Bulldogs’ 16-8 run in the fourth quarter.

Senior Luke Shapiro led San Rafael (14-10, 3-3 MCAL) with 17 points, while Wyatt Tornello posted 11 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. Will Healy added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Wes Harrison led the Trojans (11-10, 1-5) with 18 points, while Shauwn Sharpe added 16 points and Cameron Gregoire scored 14 points.

  • Stephen Song hit seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points as San Domenico held off Urban, 52-49, on Thursday. The victory moved the Panthers (16-7, 4-3) into a tie for second place with Lick-Wilmerding in the Bay Counties League. The Panthers wrap up the regular season with games against Stuart Hall, first-place University and Lick-Wilmerding.
  • St. Vincent earned a 51-42 victory over Ukiah on Thursday with strong efforts from Novato residents George Chaput (16 points), Jack Ellis (11 points ) and Barrett Chaput (10 points). The Mustangs (13-8, 7-1 NBL) are scheduled to host Sonoma Academy on Saturday night.

Boys soccer

Luke Nurney, Marco Caruso, and Mateo Hale scored to move Tam back up into first place following a 3-0 win against Redwood (5-5-4, 3-3-1 MCAL) on Friday.

West Freau assisted on Nurney’s goal to make it 1-0 before Caruso scored an unassisted goal to double the lead for Tam (11-3-3, 5-0-1). Nurney provided the assist on Hale’s goal to cap the scoring.

Tam has 16 points and sits two clear of second-place Terra Linda. Both teams close the season with games against Branson and Archie Williams next week.

Girls soccer

Tatum D’Angelica scored her fifth goal of the MCAL season for San Marin but Terra Linda scored late on a goal by Mabry Lance to secure a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Aline Rempe provided the assist for D’Angelica around the 60th minute to give San Marin (9-5-4, 2-3-2) the lead. Allegra Rodriguez took a free kick in the 75th minute that led to Lance’s goal.

Goalie Jojo Fetterman-Riggle had a late one-on-one save to preserve the tie for TL (6-6-5, 1-2-3).

Both teams are fighting for the last three MCAL playoff spots. Marin Catholic and San Marin sit on eight points with San Rafael in sixth with seven points and TL in seventh with six points.

College baseball

Aiden Romero doubled and Gaetano Polizzotti had a base hit as College of Marin’s bats were otherwise quiet during Friday’s 9-0 home loss to Santa Rosa. Three Bear Cub pitchers combined on the two-hitter, with one walk, and 12 strikeouts. Mariners starter Anthony Del Prete took the loss as he went 5 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, with four strikeouts. The Mariners (0-2) travel to Santa Rosa for a rematch on Saturday.

College softball

Dominican University split its opening games at the CUI Kickoff Classic in Irvine, dropping a 3-0 decision to Colorado Christian before beating Cal State Dominguez Hills 5-2 in the nightcap Friday at the Great Park. Kate Tobola led the team with hits in both games going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and a run scored for the Penguins (1-1).
