Motorcyclist arrested after injuring officer in Limassol chase
A 29-year-old motorcyclist has been arrested in Limassol after injuring a police officer during a traffic stop and leading officers on a brief pursuit in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 1.00 am while four members of the Limassol traffic police were carrying out checks near the old port.
When officers signalled the rider to stop, he failed to comply and struck a police officer before fleeing the scene.
The rider was pursued and continued driving dangerously, violating red traffic lights along Franklin Roosevelt Avenue.
The pursuit ended near the new port, where the motorcyclist collided with a police motorcycle and was brought to a stop.
Police said the suspect resisted and assaulted the officer during his arrest.
Subsequent tests confirmed that the rider was a 29-year-old man who tested positive for alcohol, recording a final breathalyser reading of 14 micrograms, above the permitted limit of 9 micrograms.
The injured police officer was transported by ambulance to Limassol general hospital, where doctors diagnosed a sprained elbow and multiple abrasions.
Limassol traffic police are continuing investigations into the incident.
