Watch Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal And The Hamnet Cast Dance To Rihanna On Set

Hamnet may be one of the biggest tearjerkers of the year, but as a new clip shows, the cast found moments of lightness while making the film.

A newly-released video from the set of Hamnet shows Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal dancing to Rihanna’s We Found Love while filming on location in London’s Globe theatre.

In the clip, Jessie and Paul can be seen carrying Jacobi Jupe (who played Hamnet) on stage and bouncing him around as the cast dances around them on stage in costume.

Co-stars Noah Jupe and Joe Alwyn can also be seen on stage in full Elizabethan garb, busting moves to the pop song.

At one point, Paul also twirls the young actor around, while Jessie jumps around next to them.

Finally, the camera pans to show the entire theatre, full of extras, and the director, Chloe Zhao, joyfully dancing along with the rest of the cast to the Rihanna tune.

The moment of catharsis was filmed during the movie’s haunting finale, as Agnes watches Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, from the crowded Globe audience.

Many have described this final scene as one of the most emotional in recent cinema history, as it embodies the human need to find meaning in art and performance.

Fans of the drama have joked that the behind-the-scenes clip should have been placed as a post-credit scene, helping ease some of their tears.

“It was like being in a rave. The whole place started vibrating. All these extras, everybody – it was amazing,” Jessie told E! News in November.

“On our wrap day, Chloé would do these dance takes,” the Irish star told the outlet at the film’s Los Angeles premiere “There were 300 extras, all the crew. We were inside the globe, we’d gone [on] this mad journey, and she played Rihanna’s We Found Love.”

Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name, Hamnet stars Jessie and Paul as Agnes (aka Ann) Hathaway and William Shakespeare.

The film follows the couple’s meeting and imagines how the sudden death of their son Hamnet may have inspired Shakespeare’s work. 

So far this awards season, Hamnet’s cast and crew have plenty to celebrate, with Jessie winning both a Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe award for her performance as Agnes, while the film also scooped the award for Best Drama at the latter ceremony.

Hamnet is in cinemas now.
