Islamic State Khorasan Claims Suicide Attack on Chinese Restaurant in Kabul
Islamic State Khorasan claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw area, killing seven people and wounding thirteen others.
The explosion occurred at around 3 p.m. on Monday, January 19, at a Chinese restaurant in central Kabul. Taliban authorities confirmed that seven people, including one Chinese national, were killed.
Officials said at least 13 others were injured in the blast. The restaurant was known to be frequented by foreigners, including Chinese citizens, making it a sensitive security location.
Islamic State’s Khorasan branch has carried out multiple high-profile attacks in Kabul in recent years, often targeting foreign nationals, diplomatic sites, and crowded civilian areas.
China has maintained cautious engagement with Taliban-led Afghanistan since They returned to power, while the presence of Chinese citizens and projects has raised ongoing security concerns.
In a statement published by IS-linked Amaq news agency, the group said a suicide bomber entered the restaurant and detonated himself among Chinese citizens and their guards.
IS-K also claimed, without providing evidence, that the total number of killed and wounded reached 25, including Taliban members guarding the site.
The group said the attack targeted Chinese nationals over what it described as China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims.
