Trump Blames Nobel Peace Prize Snub For Greenland Threats In Extraordinary Letter

US President Donald Trump

Donald Trump has connected his failure to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to his threats to take over Greenland in an extraordinary letter to Norway’s prime minister.

Since seizing Venezuela, the US president has made it clear he believes the States should “control” the Arctic island too, causing deep alarm among his Nato allies.

He also announced on Saturday that he would slap more tariffs on eight European countries – including the UK – unless they allowed the States to seize the autonomous Danish territory, although the continent has not backed down.

Trump has now claimed his aggression was all down to the Norwegian Nobel Committee who decided not to give him the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

In a letter to Norway’s Jonas Gahr Store, he said: “Considering your Country decided not to get me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.”

His words come after the committee rejected attempts from the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado, to give Trump her award.

The committee insisted the prize is “inseparably linked to the person or organisation designated as the laureate”.

The US president told Norway that he will “now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America” instead of world peace.

He simultaneously insisted “the World is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland”.

The president continued: “Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway?

“There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also.”

Greenland is semi-autonomous and has been part of the kingdom of Denmark, for more than 300 years.

Greenland’s prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen held a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen last week, and insisted his people would choose Denmark over the US if they were asked to make a choice.

It’s thought Trump wants Greenland because of both its strategic position between the US and Europe, and its mineral wealth.

The president also claimed in his letter: “I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now NATO should do something for the United States.”

Trump has forced other Nato members to increase their defence spending so they reduce their reliance on America.

But, he often overlooks how the only time Nato’s mutual defence clause was invoked was after 2001′s 9/11 attacks, with member states rushing to the US’s aid.

Trump’s tariffs threat already caused outrage from European Union leaders over the weekend, with French president Emmanuel Macron suggesting the EU’s activates its strongest retaliatory trade tool in response.
