Trump's Envoy Demands 'Hospitality' From Greenland As He Hits Back At Possible UK Deployment

Former President Donald Trump arrives at New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, accompanied by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, left.

Donald Trump’s envoy to Greenland has called for Denmark to be “hospitable” towards the US even as the White House eyes up a possible takeover.

Jeff Landry, who is also the Governor of Louisiana, made the remark while responding to reports that British troops may soon be deployed to Greenland to protect the Arctic island.

Writing on X, he said: “History matters. The US defended Greenland’s sovereignty during WWII when Denmark couldn’t.

“After the war, Denmark re-occupied it – side stepping and ignoring UN protocol. This should be about hospitality, not hostility.”

Denmark’s ambassador to the US, Jesper Moller Sorensen, replied: “Yes, history does matter.”

He then pointed out that Denmark supported the States after 9/11 in Afghanistan and noted Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for centuries – a fact recognised internationally.

He said it was up to the people on the island to decide their future, and all five parties in Greenland’s parliament have stated they don’t want to become American.

Sorensen added that the US, Denmark and Greenland have had a successful security partnership for 80 years, and called for them to continue working together.

It comes after the US president has insisted that the States “needs” Greenland for defence, and to stop China and Russia seizing it.

He has not ruled out using military force, either, saying: “We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not.”

His remarks have caused alarm across Europe with allies hurrying to defend the Danish territory.

His threats are being taken seriously considering Trump already initiated military action against Venezuela and kidnapped its president Nicolas Maduro earlier this month.

The US president has made it clear he wants to reshape the world order using America’s military might.

To further complicate matters, both Denmark and Trump are Nato members, so any US aggression could dismantle the defence alliance altogether.

A government source told The Telegraph that British officials have met with German and French counterparts to begin preparations to protect Greenland against Russia and China.

Allegedly this plan would help ease the US president’s worries about Moscow and Beijing making a move on the Danish territory.

The insider told the newspaper: “We share President Trump’s view – Russia’s growing aggression in the High North must be deterred, and Euro-Atlantic security strengthened.”
