At least eight people, including a bride and groom, were killed and seven others injured after a gas balloon exploded during a wedding ceremony in Islamabad, Pakistani media reported.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. Sunday in the G-7 area of Islamabad, according to Geo News. Police said the wedding procession had just arrived at the groom’s home when the explosion triggered a partial building collapse.
Authorities said those killed included the groom, bride, mother, midwife, aunt, the groom’s cousin, and two neighbors. Several others were trapped under the debris but later rescued.
Police added that the explosion also caused the roofs of three neighboring houses to collapse, leaving additional residents injured. Officials attributed the blast to a gas leak and urged citizens to exercise caution during the winter months.
Gas-related accidents are common in Pakistan during winter when demand for heating increases. Previous incidents have resulted in fatalities, raising concerns about building safety and regulatory enforcement.
The government has emphasized stricter inspections and awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies, especially during crowded events like weddings, which often involve decorative lighting and heating equipment.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences to the victims’ families and ordered immediate medical care for the injured. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly explosion.
