Lost with the Nicolás Maduro and Venezuela News? Stream This Doc for Free to Catch Up?

As many millions of Americans were still recovering from the holidays, college football bowl games, and the Stranger Things series finale, the American government was launching a covert operation in Caracas, Venezuela, on Saturday, January 3, resulting in the arrest of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Although the husband and wife duo both pleaded not guilty to any wrongdoing in court on Monday, January 5, according to NPR, Maduro, in particular, is being indicted for “narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine-importation conspiracy, and weapons charges.”

Understandably, much of the world is still in shock and playing catch-up with this historic arrest. It’s not every day a sitting president of another country is hauled off to an American prison to wait to stand trial. And considering it’s in the early days, there are plenty of opinions still formulating on the matter, and future fallout is still unknown.

With all that being said, many people weren’t even familiar with Maduro prior to his being placed in handcuffs. They were completely oblivious to what made his name so infamous in not only Venezuela and the US, but globally. While a quick Google Search can provide some basic bullet points on Maduro’s questionable history, so can a certain documentary available to stream for free.

Thanks to PBS’ investigative series Frontline, you can now get a breakdown of what led to Maduro’s arrest with the hour and 24-minute documentary, A Dangerous Assignment: Uncovering Corruption in Maduro's Venezuela. And it’s completely free. Here’s a brief synopsis of the doc:

“With the Venezuelan news outlet Armando.info, Frontline investigates the figure at the heart of a corruption scandal spanning from Venezuela to the U.S. This 90-minute documentary tells the inside story of Alex Saab, his capture and then release by the U.S. in a controversial prisoner swap, and what has happened to the journalists who helped uncover the corruption scandal.”

Other Maduro Documentaries

It’s worth noting that there is another Maduro documentary that predates the PBS one, and is a DocAviv Film Festival winner. A La Calle was released in 2020, and it touches on the “national movement against the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro.” While it doesn’t appear to be streaming on a major platform, you can learn more about it on the Doc NYC website
