Conflict-related deaths in Pakistan surged 73% in 2025, with militants, security forces and civilians all suffering heavy losses amid intensifying attacks, a security report said.
Pakistan witnessed a sharp surge in conflict-related violence in 2025, with deaths rising by 73 percent compared with the previous year, a security think tank reported.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), at least 2,115 militants, 664 security personnel, and 580 civilians were killed, making 2025 the deadliest year for insurgents.
The report said attacks intensified both in scale and frequency, with militant assaults reaching their highest annual level since 2014, alongside growing use of suicide bombings and small armed drones.
Security forces also suffered heavily, recording a 26 percent rise in fatalities year-on-year, while civilian deaths increased by 24 percent compared with 2024, marking the worst civilian toll in a decade.
PICSS described 2025 as the most lethal year for Pakistan’s security forces since 2011, underscoring the expanding threat posed by militant networks across the country.
Meanwhile, reports have linked the surge in violence to the resurgence of militant groups operating along Pakistan’s western border, particularly after the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.
Analysts say strained counterterrorism coordination, economic pressures, and reduced intelligence-sharing have contributed to militants regaining operational capacity in several regions.
The report also noted a sharp rise in injuries, with 2,263 people wounded in 2025, including security personnel, civilians, militants, and members of local peace committees.
Meanwhile, PICSS highlighted an 83 percent increase in terrorism-related arrests, with 497 suspects detained, reflecting intensified counterterrorism operations by Pakistani authorities.
However, analysts warn that without sustained political stability, economic recovery, and regional cooperation, Pakistan may continue to face elevated security risks despite tougher enforcement measures.
