Iran Executes Afghanistan Citizen, Raising Human Rights Concerns
Iran has executed an Afghanistan citizen, Nazir, raising international concerns over capital punishment, human rights, and the treatment of foreign prisoners in Iranian jails.
Iran has executed 12 prisoners, including an Afghanistan national, across several facilities in the country, according to human rights organisation Hengaw.
Hengaw reported on Wednesday, December 24, that the executions were carried out in prisons located in Karaj, Rasht, Bushehr, Shahrekord, Sabzevar, Kashmar, Malayer, and Shiraz.
The Afghanistan citizen, identified as Nazir, was executed at Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. According to Hengaw, the prisoners had been sentenced to death on charges including “intentional murder” and “drug-related crimes.”
Human rights organisations have long criticised Iran for its use of capital punishment, pointing to concerns over transparency, access to legal defence, and fair trial standards for prisoners.
Hengaw reported that since the start of the year, Iran has executed at least 1,002 individuals, including 65 citizens of Afghanistan, highlighting the country’s persistently high execution rate.
The executions have drawn international concern over Iran’s human rights record, particularly the treatment of foreign nationals and individuals convicted in politically or legally sensitive cases.
Human rights advocates have urged Iranian authorities to halt the use of capital punishment and adhere to international human rights standards, stressing the need for fair judicial processes and protection for vulnerable prisoners.
