Rohit Sharma’s VHT comeback after 7 years, breaks his own List A record to seal Mumbai win
Rohit Sharma made a much-awaited return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after seven years – and he did it in blockbuster fashion. Representing Mumbai against Sikkim in the Elite Group C match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, Rohit launched a batting masterclass to celebrate his comeback.
Chasing a target of 237 runs, Rohit opened the innings and took the attack straight to the opposition. In front of a packed crowd, he brought up a magnificent century in just 62 balls, smashing eight sixes and eight fours along the way. This marked Rohit’s fastest century in List A cricket, bettering his previous best of a 63-ball hundred against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Rohit went on to score 155 runs off 94 balls, anchoring Mumbai’s chase with authority. His innings helped Mumbai to an emphatic 8-wicket victory, with the team completing the chase in 30.3 overs. For his stunning batting performance, Rohit was named the ‘Player of the Match’.
In a separate Elite Group D fixture, Virat Kohli – playing for Delhi against Andhra Pradesh – also shone brightly. Kohli completed his century in 83 balls, delivering a match-winning knock during Delhi’s chase of 299 runs. The innings came against a side featuring Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Kohli also etched a major milestone, completing 16,000 runs in List A cricket on Wednesday. He became the second Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 16,000 List A runs, and the ninth batter overall to cross the 16000-run mark, joining an elite list of legends.
Kohli’s innings finally came to an end at a personal score of 131 runs off 101 balls. He was dismissed by PVSN Raju. Kohli hit 14 fours and three sixes in his innings. Delhi captain Rishabh Pant, who came to bat next, praised Kohli for his performance.
Kohli’s performance in domestic cricket will be closely watched. Virat has now retired from Test and T20 formats and only plays ODI cricket. Kohli is still a contender to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup, and he will continue to answer his critics with his performances. Kohli has performed well in the ODI format recently. He scored two centuries and a knock of 65 runs in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against South Africa.
