China, Russia Criticize U.S. Over Venezuela Sanctions and Military Pressure at UN

China and Russia condemned U.S. military and economic pressures on Venezuela at the UN, calling Washington’s actions “bullying” and a threat to regional stability.

China and Russia criticized the United States at the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, calling Washington’s military and economic pressures on Venezuela “bullying” and a violation of international norms.

The session, convened at Venezuela’s request, accused the U.S. of conducting “the largest extortion in Venezuelan history,” reflecting the ongoing tensions over sanctions and military posturing in the region.

U.S.-Venezuela relations have been strained for years, particularly under President Nicolás Maduro, with Washington imposing sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector and key government officials. The U.S. has also recognized opposition leaders and funded humanitarian programs, intensifying diplomatic friction.

Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, said the U.S. actions contravene fundamental principles of international law. China’s UN representative, San Li, added that Beijing opposes all unilateral coercive measures and supports countries defending their sovereignty and national dignity.

Media reports highlight the deployment of U.S. military assets in the Caribbean and the interception of Venezuelan oil tankers, illustrating heightened regional tensions and potential risks for maritime trade.

The U.S. has stationed a significant military force in the Caribbean, targeting Venezuelan tankers under sanctions, according to Reuters and regional media outlets. Mike Waltz, U.S. ambassador to the UN, emphasized that Washington is committed to protecting the hemisphere, its borders, and the American people.

Additionally, the U.S. has offered a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, further escalating diplomatic and political tensions with Caracas.

The Security Council debate underscores the growing global divide, with Russia and China challenging U.S. unilateral actions while Washington defends its strategic and legal prerogatives.

Experts warn that continued sanctions, military threats, and reward programs could further destabilize Venezuela, worsen the humanitarian crisis, and risk confrontation in the Caribbean region.
