US Treasury Secretary Scott Bassett has said a final agreement on the future of TikTok will be approved during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. He confirmed that all major details have already been negotiated ahead of the summit.
Bassett told CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday that the arrangement will be formalised on Thursday on the sidelines of the APEC leaders’ gathering in South Korea. The deal seeks to address Washington’s national security concerns over data access and ownership.
According to Bassett, the plan outlines a new operating structure for TikTok that includes significant investment from US companies, ensuring that sensitive user data is protected under American jurisdiction. The changes are intended to satisfy scrutiny from US national security agencies.
President Trump last month signed an order requiring TikTok to transfer ownership to US-based entities if it wishes to continue operating within the United States. The administration has argued that Chinese control of the platform presents data and surveillance risks.
TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has been under pressure for months to agree to divest its US operations. Beijing has insisted that any sale must comply with Chinese export control rules governing algorithms and technology.
