Governor Jeff Landry issues executive order concerning major jail breach
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Today, Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order mandating an aggressive response from multiple other state agencies. They are tasked with addressing the breach at the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility. Governor Landry has also issued an executive order implementing transparency in the Orleans Parish criminal justice system and the state.
The executive order states that the Inspector General will oversee audits of case files while the Metropolitan Crime Commission develops a system for tracking cases. The DOC will review the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility operations for compliance, while DOC inmates will be relocated to state-run facilities.
The order also indicates, the clerk of courts, document continuance requests, and judges are urged to address unnecessary delays. The Attorney General will also lead the investigation with full cooperation from state agencies.
"Our criminal justice system deserves transparency and accountability. Today I am signing the executive orders that I promised at last Sunday's press conference to start implementing the transparency and accountability in the Orleans Parish Criminal Justice System and elsewhere around this state. Today, we say enough is enough," Landy says.
Governor Landry maintains that public safety is his priority as each inmate is recaptured.
