Marvel Might Be Reversing Course On Its Jonathan Majors Problem
Last February, Marvel Studios made sweeping changes to its upcoming projects in order to remove embattled star Jonathan Majors from the franchise, per The Hollywood Reporter. But will things stay that way? Here's what happened originally, plus why Marvel Studios is rumored to reverse its earlier position and possibly bring the Kang actor back into the fold.
After appearing in the Season 1 finale of Marvel's Loki in 2021, Majors made his cinematic debut as Kang in 2023 in the Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. After that, he was set to reprise the role across the next phase of MCU blockbusters, most notably in 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. But the studio immediately severed ties with the actor after he was found guilty of reckless assault and harassment stemming from a March 2023 incident with his ex-partner, whom he met on the set of Quantumania.
As of 2024, the 2026 movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was reworked to become Avengers: Doomsday and is set to star Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom rather than Majors as Kang.

However, at the time, some Marvel sources contended that some of these changes were undertaken before Majors’ guilty verdict. Creatives apparently had second thoughts about Kang after Quantumania underperformed at the box office, grossing just $476 million worldwide.
So, since 2024, conventional wisdom held that any of the multiverse shenanigans Marvel had planned for Kang the Conqueror were permanently canceled or creatively very different than what had originally been planned. But as of February 2025, a whole year after the initial reports that Majors had been booted out of the MCU, rumors have emerged that Marvel is swinging back the other way.
Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, is possibly, "Considering bringing Jonathan Majors back into the MCU," according to a rumor published on ScreenGeek. Allegedly, this idea would include having Majors come back for at least one project (film or TV) that would "wrap up some loose ends with Kang," and effectively fix any plotholes with the larger MCU landscape.
To be clear, this is very much a grain of salt situation, as this rumor only comes from one undisclosed source, and the evidence seems to support the contrary outcome. Some fans have also suggested that Kang could simply be recast, which, of course, has happened before. Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as the Hulk in 2012, while Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard as Rhodey in 2010.
So, will Marvel fans see Kang again? That all depends on which version of the multiverse we're living in.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
