Shōgun, The Bear, and The Penguin led Tuesday’s 2025 Directors Guild of America Awards nominations in the TV, commercial, and documentary categories.
In drama, Shōgun took up three of the five spots for the episodes “Anjin,” “Crimson Sky, and “Ladies of the Willow World.” They face “Dreadnought” from The Diplomat and “Part 6” from True Detective: Night Country. DGA rules stipulate that anthology series, such as True Detective, must compete in either the drama or comedy categories, not limited as they are allowed to do at the Emmys.
The comedy lineup features triple episodes from The Bear: “Doors,” “Tomorrow,” and “Napkins,” the last of which was helmed by Ayo Edebiri. The other nominees are “Bulletproof” from Hacks and “No Lessons Learned” from Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Three was the magic number apparently because The Penguin also scored three nominations in the the limited series/TV movie category for the episodes “Cent’anni,” “A Great or Little Thing,” and “Top Hat.” This strong showing bodes well for the HBO series’ Emmy prospects later this year. The full seasons of Disclaimer, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and Ripley, directed by Steven Zaillian, are the other nominees.
At the Emmys in September, Shōgun‘s “Crimson Sky,” directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, won the drama directing honor. “Fishes” from Season 2 of The Bear nabbed the comedy prize for Christopher Storer, his second straight win. Storer directed Season 3’s “Tomorrow.” Zaillian, a past DGA champ for The Night Of, won in limited for Ripley.
Last year, the DGA winners were “Long Long Time” from The Last of Us in drama, “Review” from The Bear in comedy, and “Her and Him” from Lessons in Chemistry in limited. The Last of Us beat four episodes of Succession, while “Her and Him” overcame a triple vote-split with two other episodes of Lessons in Chemistry to prevail.
The DGA film nominations will be announced on Wednesday.
The 77th DGA Awards will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8.
