The 82nd Golden Globes returned to CBS on Jan. 5 officially kicking off the 2025 award season. Viewers took to social media to share their opinions and reactions to the annual award show that highlights excellence in both television and film.

The comedian was very tongue-in-cheek when it came to her opening monologue, not hesitating to roast stars in the audience (as she’s known to do). Glasser poked fun at the holding space moment from the viral “Wicked” interview between Golden Globes nominees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, with the pair joining in on the fun and recreating the moment of Grande awkwardly holding Erivo’s finger. She even got the stamp of approval from former host of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart, who took to social media to say “Nikki Glaser is very very good at this.” Glaser also made Golden Globes history, becoming the first woman to ever host the award show on her own.

During the award show, eagle-eyed fans began to notice a specific piece of jewelry that Zendaya had worn as part of her red carpet look, a diamond ring on her ring finger. Many took to social media to speculate if this meant that the actor was engaged to her long-term boyfriend and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” costar Tom Holland. Neither party has confirmed nor denied their current relationship status.
The actor received her first Golden Globe nomination for her work in “Emilia Pérez.” As soon as her name was read, Saldaña let out a sob as her mom and date for the evening congratulated her, and she continued to cry throughout her speech. “I’m filled with adrenaline, but my heart is full of gratitude,” she said through tears. “Thank you so much to the Golden Globes for celebrating our film and honoring the women of Emilia Pérez. Thank you so much. Oh my God!”
Whether it was done to save time or add a new layer to the experience is unclear, but social media users definitely thought it was an interesting approach. The award show decided that rather than show clips of actors in the work they were nominated for, they displayed an overview of the room with a pin that showed where each nominee was seated as well as a reaction cam of them in the corner. “Ah yes, because I’d much rather know where nominees are sitting, rather than seeing a clip of their work,” wrote one user on X alongside an eye-roll emoji.
After quoting Allison Janney’s iconic Oscar speech, where she joked with the crowd, “I did it all by myself,” Farrell went on to thank the many people who made “The Penguin” possible before going on a tangent about the production’s craft services, specifically someone named Carolina. “Craft service! … Carolina, Carolina, on those cold winter nights when I was the only one overheating, she’d be there with a coke and a water every half an hour… Carolina, god bless you. She kept the whole crew going.”
After over 45 years in the entertainment industry, Moore shared during her acceptance speech that this was her first time winning anything as an actor. Moore went on to say that a few years ago she thought she was done acting before the script for “The Substance” came her way. Moore ended her speech by saying “What I think this movie is imparting is in those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough. I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’ And so today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong.”
When Jodie Foster took to the stage to accept her award for her performance in “True Detective: Night Country,” Sofia Vergara stood up and shouted, “No, no!” to which Foster joked back, “I know, I know.” Vergara was nominated in the same category for her performance in “Griselda,” and didn’t hold back from showing her disappointment over losing out to Foster — all in good fun, of course. “Give me one!” Vergara interjected again as Foster attempted to give her speech. The bit continued after Foster’s remarks concluded, with the camera cutting back to Vergara, who threw her arms up in defeat.
Before presenting the award for box office achievement, Vin Diesel looked at the crowd and spotted a familiar face. “Hey, Dwayne,” he said to his “The Fate of the Furious” costar before the camera cut to Johnson who had presented earlier in the night. The crowd laughed as viewers at home noted the moment, some drawing comparison to the 2015 VMAs moment when Nicki Minaj took to the mic after winning a Moon Person to call out host Miley Cyrus by saying, “Miley, what’s good?” Johnson and Diesel have both been open about the animosity that existed between them while filming, but that’s all water under the bridge and Sunday’s interaction was likely a jest.

When “Emilia Pérez” won Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, one of the biggest awards of the night, the film’s cast and crew took to the stage to share their gratitude. The film’s star, Karla Sofía Gascón gave a speech that resonated with many watching from home. “You can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul.”
Gascón was also nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor, making her the first trans woman to be nominated for a film acting category.
