Margaret Qualley is holding up her end of her Chanel contract. The house ambassador was photographed on the red carpet for the 2025 Golden Globe awards in a custom Chanel couture dress. The tiered design was a frothy tulle dress featuring spaghetti straps. It also featured a black ribbon at the waist. Though glamorous, it seems like a remarkably comfortable and easy dress to wear, a hallmark of Chanel design.
For shoes, Qualley went with another signature of Chanel: a slingback. Specifically she wore the brand’s printed lambskin and patent calfskin slingbacks. The shoes feature a printed lambskin body — Qualley’s are white. The cap-toe, which is a Chanel staple, is patent leather. When Chanel first began to make two-tone cap-toe shoes it was to lengthen the leg while optically shortening the foot. Most of those original designs were sat on a heel of about two inches. This new shoe is practically a flat with a heel of less than one inch. It features a strap on the outside of each foot while the inside is bare.
Chanel currently sells that slingback in a variety of colors as well as fabrics for $1,200.
Founder Gabriel “Coco” Chanel is largely credited for designing the modern day slingback. In addition to her original version being two-tone with a cap-toe and a heel of just about two inches, they included elastic in the strap. This was an idea from Massaro Paris, the shoe atelier that Chanel worked with on the design of this shoe and all Chanel couture designs. This removed the need for a buckle.
Slingbacks trended in 2024 and things don’t seem to be dying down. Selena Gomez recently wore a pair this weekend.
