New Delhi: Many times we have come across reports and content that mention satellite phones, especially in the context of Pakistani terrorists and Naxalites. Security forces have recovered satellite phones apart from weapons from them.
This also makes us wonder what a satellite phone is and how it works, and how it is different from a smartphone.
Here, we explain the above context to help you understand the fundamentals of these two communication devices.
Broadly speaking, smartphones and satellite phones are both modern communication mediums, but the way both work is different. While the smartphone relies on the normal telecom network, the satellite phone works by connecting directly to the satellites. Let’s know the difference between the two- and the way satellite phones work.
Smartphones usually work through telephone towers and internet networks. It requires a 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi network for calling, messaging, and internet usage. If there is no network coverage, the smartphone cannot be used.
At the same time, satellite phones connect directly to satellites above the earth instead of telecom towers. This means that it does not require a network tower to use it. Satellite phones can be used in places where no telecom network is available, such as in dense forest, desert, sea, or mountainous areas.
Satellite phones have a special antenna that communicates directly with satellites. When you make a call or send a message, this signal reaches the satellite directly. The signal is then sent to the receiver via another satellite or ground station. This process takes more time and energy than a normal mobile network.
Works anywhere: It can be used even when the network is not available in remote areas.
Emergency communication: It is extremely useful during natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods.
Security purposes: It is also used in military and search and rescue operations and safety and security related operations.
However, the price of satellite phones is high, and it is heavy and cumbersome to carry around. Also, its use is restricted in some countries for security reasons.
