Raising teens teaches you that life’s not fair — for the parents. Your kids expect you to let them drive your car and you to fill up the gas; they get upset if you are too interested in their lives but equally mad you didn’t wake them up before school; they think they run the home they don’t financially contribute to (because they pretty much do). Nicole Kidman is going through this right now with her teen daughters Sunday, 16, and Faith, 14, who she shares with husband Keith Urban. She just shared one thing her teens have “not allowed” her to do, and the double standard is an outrage … but at the same time, so typically teenage!
In an interview with W. Magazine, the Babygirl actress shared that while she is saving some of her iconic red-carpet gowns for her daughters, they do not return the favor by letting her wear their clothes.
“I’ve saved all the red carpet dresses,” Kidman told the outlet. “I have them all beautifully boxed. They’re museum pieces.”
She continued, “They raid my wardrobe all the time. I’m like, ‘Okay, what’s mine is yours.’” Kidman may have an open-door policy on her closet, but Sunday and Faith don’t have the same rules for their mother.
“But I don’t raid their closet, even though I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s cute,’” she explained. “But I’m not allowed to take anything. It’s a one-way exchange.”
Darn, that’s the worst! No matter that she probably bought those clothes; she is barred from wearing them. All moms of teenage daughters can feel her pain.
This isn’t the first time the Big Little Lies actress has been kept humbly in check by her opinionated daughters. In an interview with DuJour in 2021, the Oscar winner shared a story of Sunday directing a stage production of Annie for her school. A”ll I wanted to do was whoop and holler,” Kidman told the outlet. “But I’m kept on a tight lock and key. I just want to go, ‘You’re amazing.’ But I’m not allowed to call out the window of the car or even compliment too much.”
At least she’s understanding. “As a parent, you’re the wall,” Kidman added. “They want to hold onto you and know you’re there, and then when they kick off, they want to know you’re there, too.”
No need for hurt feelings when you look at it in this beautiful way!
At the end of the day, Kidman has so much empathy for her daughters. The Expats star told Elle in March, “I love teenage girls. I just find them exquisite. I marvel at that age group and what they’re dealing with, but also their ability to handle so much.”
Her never-ending wisdom and grace when it comes to her teens is so inspirational.
