Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) clapped back a President-elect Trump after he blasted President Biden for awarding her and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) the Presidential Citizens Medal this week.
“Donald, this is not the Soviet Union,” Cheney wrote Friday on social platform X. “You can’t change the truth and you cannot silence us.”
Cheney was recognized Thursday for her service as vice chair on the special House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol as well as her seven years in Congress. Thompson, who served as chair of the Jan. 6 committee, was also praised by Biden for his “lifelong dedication to safeguarding our Constitution.”
Earlier on Friday, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize the move, claiming Biden awarded the duo “fake medals" and labeling Cheney as “corrupt."
“Biden rewarded her only because she hated ‘TRUMP,’” he wrote about the former congresswoman.
Cheney, an outspoken critic of Trump, has long found herself at the center of the former president’s ire. She responded to Trump’s social media post later on Friday, calling out his past claims about election rigging in 2020.
“Remember all your lies about the voting machines, the election workers, your countless allegations of fraud that never happened?” she wrote. “Many of your lawyers have been sanctioned, disciplined or disbarred, the courts ruled against you, and dozens of your own White House, administration, and campaign aides testified against you.”
Rudy Giuliani, a staunch Trump ally, was disbarred in Washington last fall for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, the D.C. Bar found that Jeffrey Clark violated ethics rules in helping Trump’s efforts to block the transfer of power and recommended his law license be suspended for two years, while another Trump ally, Sidney Powell, had sanctions imposed on her after seeking to overturn results in Michigan.
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney went on to highlight former Vice President Mike Pence’s refusal to not certify the 2020 election results at the request of Trump.
"Remember how your former Vice President prevented you from overturning our Republic?" Liz Cheney stated.
“We remember,” she continued. “And now, as you take office again, the American people need to reject your latest malicious falsehoods and stand as the guardrails of our Constitutional Republic — to protect the America we love from you."
