BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana officials are praising Representative Mike Johnson (R-La.) following his reelection as Speaker of the House on Friday. Johnson, the 56th Speaker, secured his second term on the first ballot during a vote by the 119th Congress.
Johnson, who was first elected Speaker by the 118th Congress in October 2023, received widespread support among Republicans, though the vote saw some early opposition. Representatives Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and Keith Self (R-Ohio) initially withheld their votes before switching to support Johnson after negotiations. Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) was the only Republican to vote against him.
Following Johnson’s reelection, prominent Louisiana leaders, including U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy, Governor Jeff Landry, Representative Steve Scalise, and Attorney General Liz Murrill, shared their congratulations.
Senator Bill Cassidy highlighted Johnson’s ability to unite people:
“Mike Johnson brings people together to achieve a shared goal. He is deeply committed to conservative values and advancing a pro-America agenda. He is making Louisiana proud. Americans trust Mike to lead the House effectively and with integrity this Congress. I do too!”
Representative Steve Scalise expressed enthusiasm for working alongside Johnson:
“Congratulations to my friend! We’re fired up and ready to work with President Trump to Make America Great Again!”
Senator John Kennedy called Johnson the perfect leader for the job:
“Congratulations to my friend! Any fair-minded person sees that he leads effectively, intelligently, and humbly. He’s not just the right man for the job, he’s the only man for the job as we put America back on track.”
Attorney General Liz Murrill kept her message brief:
“God bless the Speaker of the House. Congratulations on your re-election.”
