TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka Public Schools (TPS) is watching the weather closely Friday as a possible winter storm approaches the area, potentially threatening the first day of school in 2025.
27 News reached out to USD 501 on Jan. 3 to see how the district is planning ahead of a winter storm for the weekend of Jan. 4-5. Students are scheduled to return to the district's classrooms on Monday, Jan. 6 for their first day of classes in 2025. TPS spokesman Aarion Gray said school officials are keeping an eye on the weather situation.
"Topeka Public Schools will be closely monitoring weather conditions throughout the week and into the weekend," Gray said. "Weather and school closure announcements will be made through School Messenger and posted on media outlets by 5:30 AM in the event of a weather-related school closure."

Much of northeast Kansas is under a winter storm warning for this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Meteorologists are forecasting sleet, ice and snow accumulations of up to 12 inches in some parts of the state along with strong wind gusts.
