THE Christmas decorations will be coming down over the next few days for us all but, once they are away, our houses can seem a little empty and sad.
According to experts, however, it’s the ideal time to brighten our surroundings.
Research shows that people in the UK will spend 234 hours indoors during winter – so making small changes around the house to help boost joy can make a huge difference to wellbeing.
Lorraine Paterson, Sales Director at Barratt Homes East Scotland, said: “This can be a great time to reset and prepare for the new year ahead.
“Adjusting your surroundings at home is an excellent place to start and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
“Switching colour schemes and lighting to rearranging furniture, minor changes will help brighten the mood.”
Barratt Homes Scotland has teamed up with Blocc Interiors to share these five top tips that will lift your spirits this January by transforming your home into a relaxing haven.
Dopamine Décor
SCOTTISH winters can be dark and gloomy with little in the way of light, sunny days – so it’s important to have some sunshine inside.
Lorraine said: “Brighten your surroundings with colours that evoke pure happiness.
“From sunny citrus yellows to clear sky blues and soft playful pinks, introduce splashes of dopamine triggering colours through vibrant cushions, bold artwork or even a painted accent wall.
“These cheerful hues will stimulate joy and create a lively atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the winter chill.”
Lighten the Mood
WHILE it’s nice to bring in some light, it’s important not to make your home too bright.
The expert said: “Swap cold, harsh lightbulbs for warm, soft lighting to create a cosy and uplifting atmosphere.
“The right lighting can do wonders for your mental well-being, making your space feel more inviting and restful.
“Combine this with playful touches like neon signs featuring empowering messages or quirky designs—these add a pop of colour and personality while boosting your mood during the darker evenings.”
Bring Nature Indoors
BRINGING the outside inside is another way to spread some cheer during the chillier season – and once the tree is down, it’s nice to add some greenery.
Lorraine says: “Studies have shown that simply looking at plants can reduce stress and boost happiness. Fill your home with lush greenery or seasonal flowers to breathe life into your surroundings.
“Don’t have a green thumb? Opt for low-maintenance options like snake plants or peace lilies. Pair them with natural materials like wooden accents or ceramic pots for added warmth.”
Gallery of Happiness
MANY homes can look bare after the decorations and sparkles of Christmas disappear so it’s nice to have a personal touch.
And getting some magical memories of the festive season up can help the season last.
The pro said: “Dedicate a wall to personal storytelling.
“Mix treasured photos, postcards, and art to create a unique gallery that reminds you of your happiest moments.
“Arrange it with different frame sizes and styles for a playful, eclectic look that sparks a smile every time you see it.”
Playful Personalisation
LORRAINE reckons another way to brighten up your home is to get crafty – it can also help lighten your mood if you have the post Christmas blues.
She said: “Rediscover the therapeutic joy of creating something uniquely yours.
“Whether it’s hand- painting a piece of furniture, designing a mural for a door, or revamping a plain object with bold colours, these projects will allow you to inject personality and fun into your space.
“What’s better than a revamp project to dive into while it’s cold and grey outside?”
