THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A Bronx cashier at a hospital cafe volunteers her off time at a women's shelter, giving joy, resources and inspiration to others.
Elaine Gibson is known by her coworkers and community as a hero for homeless people. She's also the sister-in-law of PIX11's Kendis Gibson.
Gibson is known for her nearly 25 years of service at the Montefiore Moses Campus in the Bronx. But it's her work outside the hospital that everybody is talking about.
A little bit of love, latte, and laughter. Every day you can find Gibson front and center at the register. Her smile and personality make people feel good, no matter what they are going through. Gibson has handwritten inspirational quotes everywhere.
Lifting spirits both on the job and after hours, Gibson is busy helping people in her community. It started with a woman she met in the cafe who was hungry and needed help.
It hasn’t always been easy for Gibson to smile. In 2022, she went through tough times, losing her son to gun violence.
Gibson said her work helping others is what saved her. The love that she gave all those years came back to her. She's now surrounded by the love of women she calls her Grateful 8.
Esra Fares met Gibson when she was in a shelter. It changed her life.
Gibson regularly visits shelters to bring home-cooked food, coats, and personal hygiene products. She also teams up with the Westchester Bronx Society of Black Physicians to fight period poverty.
Gibson said service soothes her soul. She hopes to open up her own women's shelter one day.
