15-20 kts of S-SSE wind and lowering grey skies greeted the second day of 2025 in Sydney. Out at sea as of 0500 the MHL buoy was detecting 2.7 metres of 7 second SSW energy. The direction means that pretty much all the swell is heading away from the coast. Surface conditions were comparatively clean in the protected south corners, but waves were exceedingly weak and small.
This morning’s swell model data offers us no hope of an immediate improvement. If the GFS and ECMWF models are to be believed, there will be no break from the sub-8 second periods, but maybe around this time next week we’ll get a pulse into the 2-ish metre range from the SE with light onshores for the early.

A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the coast while a trough and fresh southerly change move along the south coast. This change is forecast to reach the Hunter or Macquarie Coast today and then stall and weaken. After this the ridge of high pressure will redevelop with fresh north to northeasterly winds expected along the southern and central waters.
