LOS ANGELES – Will Emilia Perez’s Karla Sofia Gascón make history as the first out transgender woman to win the Golden Globe Awards’ best actress in a motion picture – comedy or musical trophy?
If Karla wins, she will be the second trans actress to be honored by the Globes for acting after Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s precedent-setting victory as best actress in a television series – drama for Pose in 2022.
Will Ariana’s turn as Glinda in Wicked, which made her a first-time Golden Globe nominee, also lead to her first Globes honors as best supporting actress in a motion picture?
Will Cooper Koch, another first-time Globes nominee, go on stage to accept the Globes’ best actor in a limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television prize for his portrayal of Erik Menendez in Monsters?
Will Shogun’s Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano, all Globes first-time nominees, triumph in their respective acting categories in television?
Will Fernanda Torres of I’m Still Here be called onstage to make her the first Brazilian actress to win best actress in a motion picture – drama? Twenty-six years ago, Fernanda’s mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was up for the same award for Central Station by Walter Salles who, by coincidence, also directed I’m Still Here.
On Timothée Chalamet’s fourth Globes acting nomination, will he finally win best actor in a motion picture – drama for his portrayal of music icon Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown?
These questions and many more will be answered on January 5 (Monday morning, January 6, Manila time) when the 82nd Annual Golden Awards announces the winners in Hollywood’s Party of the Year, traditionally the first major show of the awards season at the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton.
A caveat: The content in this piece does not necessarily reflect my voting preferences as a Golden Globe voter; it was culled from vegasinsider.com and other awards pundits.
Another four-time nominee, Steve Martin, has a chance to finally win best actor in a television series – musical or comedy for Only Murders in the Building.
Steve’s costar, Selena Gomez, has two chances to walk up the stage. She’s nominated for best actress in a television series – musical or comedy for the same show and best supporting actress in a motion picture for Emilia Perez.
But another Emilia Perez star, Zoe Saldana, could triumph and emerge as the first American-Dominican to bag the Globes best supporting actress statuette.
But will it be a Wicked night? The film’s Elphaba, Cynthia Erivo, could romp off with the best actress in a motion picture – musical or comedy prize. It’s a tight contest. Aside from Cynthia and Karla, Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) Amy Adams (Nightbitch), and Zendaya (Challengers) are also cited.
Nicole Kidman has a chance to win her sixth acting Globes trophy for Baby Girl. Also vying for best actress in a motion picture – drama are the aforementioned Fernanda, Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl – talk about evolution – from Baywatch to this performance), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door), and Kate Winslet (Lee).
If Nicole does triumph, she will join these actors who won six or more Globe trophies – Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson, Alan Alda, and the late Angela Lansbury.
In the best actor in a motion picture – drama field, Timothée has tough competition – Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice).
Speaking of Sebastian, he’s also in the running for best actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy against Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Gabriel LaBelle (Saturday Night), Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness), and Glen Powell (Hit Man).
Both Denzel Washington (Gladiator) and Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) have a chance to earn a second best supporting actor – motion picture Globe. They are up against Yuri Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
If Yuri prevails, he could be the first Russian to win in this category.
Ariana, Selena, and Zoe’s best supporting actress – motion picture fellow nominees are Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).
Remarkably, all the best director – motion picture candidates are first-timers: Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light). Good luck to these talented filmmakers!
Awards forecasters are leaning toward Brady, Sean or Edward.
Emilia Perez, the film with the most nominations (10), including for best motion picture – musical or comedy and best motion picture – non-English language, has a chance to eclipse La La Land (7 wins) as the most awarded during one Globes evening.
In the best motion picture – musical or comedy derby, Emilia Perez is in the race with Anora, Challengers, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked.
In the best motion picture – drama derby, awards prognosticators are betting on Conclave, The Brutalist or A Complete Unknown over Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5.
Emilia Perez is also in the best motion picture – non-English language contest, alongside All We Imagine as Light, The Girl with the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Vermiglio.
Will Pixar/Disney boost their reputation as the powerhouse when it comes to winning the Golden Globe best motion picture – animated race? Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 are contenders but this year, the competition is tough – Flow, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and The Wild Robot.
In the television categories, will Jeremy Allen White continue his winning streak for The Bear in the best actor in a television series – musical or comedy? If Jeremy triumphs again, he will join Alan Alda (M*A*S*H) and Michael J. Fox (Spin City) as actors who won that category for three consecutive years.
This year, Jeremy’s fellow nominees are the aforementioned Steve, Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), Jason Segel (Shrinking), and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building).
Will Sofia Vergara, cited for Griselda, make history as the first Colombian actress to cinch best actress in a limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television?
Standing in Sofia’s way are Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kate Winslet (The Regime).
And will the raunchy humor of Nikki Glaser, this year’s Globes host, fly well with the A-list audience as they nibble on chef Nobu Matsushisa’s king crab sushi, sashimi salad, yellowtail jalapenos, and white fish and salmon sushi?
In addition to her risqué jokes, will Nikki also get to deliver acceptance remarks since she’s up for an award for best performance in stand-up comedy on television for her special, Someday You’ll Die?
Nikki is in good company – Jamie Foxx (What Had Happened Was), Seth Meyers (Dad Man Walking), Adam Sandler (Love You), Ali Wong (Single Lady), and Ramy Youssef (More Feelings).
