TOPEKA (KSNT) - The road to building more affordable housing in downtown Topeka is one step closer to being finalized after a Monday Shawnee County Commission meeting.
Commissioners gathered on Dec. 30 and expressed intent to grant a $65 million industrial revenue bond (IRB) to Union Development Holdings, LLC, a company based out of Indianapolis. Earlier this year, Topeka's City Council approved tax breaks for the developer.
Commissioners held a public hearing on whether to grant an IRB on Dec. 30. They are expected to vote to approve the request at another meeting on Thursday, Jan. 2.
The LLC wants to build a new 250-unit apartment complex near Southeast 12th Street and Southeast Quincy Street, across from the downtown water tower. The development would be income-qualified based.
