Legendary Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has come forward in favour of Indian star batter Virat Kohli and backed him regarding the ongoing criticism for his performance in Tests. Manjrekar believes that it is not fine to judge the player by the some standards, especially since everyone plays in different manner.
Sanjay’s comments came after Kohli’s batting breakdown. In the boxing-Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium, Kohli failed to perform with the bat which caused India losing the all-important match by 184 runs. Kohli fell cheaply for 9 runs, where his struggles continued against outside the off-stump.
Kohli has faced criticism for his flop shows with the bat in 2024, with his average hovering at around 24. However, Manjrekar wants Indian team management to give longer time duration for Kohli and some mercy.
Manjrekar has also called Kohli as a modern-day great of Test cricket, along with believing that his previous achievements order regular support.
“I must say there is no comparison between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as Test batters. Kohli is right up there. He’s a great Test batter, and Rohit is a good Test batter. Rohit’s white-ball batting is great. So, Virat obviously deserves a longer rope,” Sanjay Manjrekar said on Star Sports.
“It’s not so much about Virat Kohli. I want to know what the batting coach of India is doing. We can’t solve the obvious problem of such a fine player. Enough has been said about Virat Kohli; we just have to leave him alone,” he concluded.
Kohli will now be entering the last match of the BGT in Sydney, as the fans will expect him to give out a decent performance.
