Ange Postecoglou will be keeping his fingers crossed and hoping for the best as one of his defenders will be assessed over the coming days.
The timing of Tottenham’s injury crisis could not have been any worse, with Postecoglou forced to use the same set of 15 players over the last month and a half, even though fixtures have come thick and fast.
The same players have had to play nearly every three days and that has meant a major drop off in the side’s intensity levels.
Currently, Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies, Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert are all out with medium to long-term problems, and the situation got even worse in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Wolves on Sunday.
Tottenham’s situation was compounded when Destiny Udogie went down clutching his hamstring in the 50th minute, forcing Postecoglou to bring on Sergio Reguilon.
Postecoglou admitted after the game that the situation was concerning, suggesting that the accumulated fatigue had eventually caught up with the Italian.
Spurs are yet to find out the extent of the 22-year-old’s damage, with The Standard now revealing that the defender’s injury will be assessed over the coming days.
Postecoglou and co thus face a nervous wait over the next 24 to 48 hours as the last thing they need right now is to lose another key player for an extended duration.
If Tottenham do learn that Udogie will be sidelined for around six weeks or so, that might persuade the club to push ahead with a move for another left-back in the January window.
The club might have initially viewed a centre-midfielder, centre-back and a winger as bigger priorities than a left-back, but the situation could change depending on the news they get regarding the former Udinese man.
