New Delhi: On Day 5 of the 4th Test between India and Australia, a controversial DRS decision led to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal after being caught behind by Alex Carey. The on-field umpire had initially turned down the appeal, but Australia referred it to the third umpire, Sharfuddoula Saikat. Jaiswal, on 84, had mistimed a pull shot, and while ‘Snicko’ showed no clear evidence of the ball touching his bat or glove, Saikat upheld the appeal, ruling in favor of Australia.
The controversial DRS decision that saw Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed during Day 5 of the 4th Test left the batter stunned. After his appeal was turned down on-field, the third umpire, Sharfuddoula Saikat, upheld the decision despite inconclusive evidence on Snicko.
Sharfuddoula Saikat, born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a former first-class cricketer and now an umpire. He debuted as an umpire in 2007 and became the first Bangladeshi to join the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires in 2024, replacing Marais Erasmus.

India heads into the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground with its back against the wall, and its fate is no longer in its hands. To keep its hopes alive, India must win the Sydney Test. If India levels the series 2-2, it will need Sri Lanka to defeat Australia 1-0 in their upcoming series.
In such a scenario, India’s win percentage would rise to 55.26%, while Australia’s would stand at 53.50%. However, if Australia wins even one match, its percentage would increase to 57.01%, securing its place in the final.
A series defeat here would eliminate India from the race for the final. Nevertheless, if either side faces a penalty for a slow over-rate, the qualification equation could change for both teams.
