Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas’ political bureau, was killed in Tehran, Iran, on July 31, 2024. There have been various reports regarding the circumstances of his death, but Israeli media outlets have recently released new details, revealing the complexity of the assassination plot against Haniyeh.
Israeli Channel 12, in a report published on Saturday, December 28, citing security sources, stated that Israel took advantage of Haniyeh’s habit of staying in a fixed location. A bomb was placed in his bedroom, which was controlled remotely.
According to the report, Israel had been monitoring Haniyeh’s habits and behavior and knew in advance that he would be staying at a fixed location during his visit to Iran. This predictable routine allowed them to plant a bomb in his bedroom.
Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated on July 31, 2024, a day after the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s president, Masoud Bezeshkian, in Tehran. His assassination triggered widespread international reactions.
This is the first time Israel has not only claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s assassination but has also revealed new details about how the operation was carried out.
Channel 12 described the assassination as a “complex” operation, claiming that it had been planned months in advance.
According to the report, Haniyeh went to his accommodation after the inauguration ceremony. However, just before midnight, when Israel was preparing to detonate the bomb, an issue arose that could have disrupted the entire operation.
Haniyeh’s bedroom air conditioning unit broke down near midnight, and, feeling the heat in his room, Haniyeh stepped out. However, the staff at his accommodation quickly repaired the unit, and Haniyeh returned to his room to sleep.
This issue almost derailed the operation, or the bomb could have been discovered during the repair of the air conditioning unit. However, Haniyeh returned to his room, and the assassination operation was successfully completed.
The report further mentioned that Israeli intelligence agents (Mossad) had planted the bomb in Haniyeh’s pillow before the inauguration ceremony of Masoud Bezeshkian.
Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran led to widespread reactions, and Iran launched Operation “Vow of the Sadiq 2” in retaliation, attacking Israel in what it called the “revenge for Ismail Haniyeh’s blood.”
The revelation of the details surrounding Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination underscores the precision and planning that went into the operation. Israel’s use of Haniyeh’s predictable behavior and routine as part of their strategy illustrates the high level of intelligence-gathering involved.
The assassination and its aftermath have further intensified tensions in the region, with Iran’s retaliatory strikes against Israel highlighting the ongoing conflict between the two sides.
